Army Chief, Gen Attahiru, 10 others die in plane crash

Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff ,General Ibrahim Attahiru is dead. He lost his life along with seven other military officers and crew when the military plane taking them to Kaduna crashed near the Kaduna airport on Friday, May 21 ,2021.

The military plane crashed short of the runway while attempting to land during heavy rain at the Kaduna Airport around 6.00PM.

There are no official list of persons on board the aircraft  but sources said there were no fewer than seven top military brass in the plane.

The Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Accident Investigation Bureau, AIB Nigeria, Akin Olateru, has confirmed the crash which killed 11 people on board.

The Nigerian Air Force which operated the ill-fated Beachcraft 350 Aircraft flight says it is yet to ascertain the cause of the crash but the Nigerian Army has issued a statement on the accident.

Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Mohammed Yerima said:”The Nigerian Army regrets to announce the passing away of its Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru . The sad event occurred following an air crash in Kaduna which also claimed the lives of 10 other officers including the crew.

“The COAS was enroute Kaduna from Abuja on Friday, 21 May, 2021 when the unfortunate incident happened.

“Details of the sad incident and burial arrangements will be communicated soon.”
