Lassa Fever spreading, FG urges caution

Lassa Fever is spreading to many states as the Federal Government placed all health facilities in the country on red alert following fear of the spread of Coronavirus disease said to have originated from China and spreading across the globe.

While Nigeria joins the rest of the World to battle the spread of the Coronavirus, it has its own health crisis with the outbreak of Lassa fever that is currently ravaging the country and has claimed several lives in eleven states of the federation.

Coronavirus has been reported in no fewer than 12 countries including the United States, France, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, Nepal, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, Macao and South Korea, leading to the death of 54 persons while 1,287 others have so far been infected.

Lassa fever has killed no fewer than 29 persons including two medical doctors while another medical doctor is receiving treatment having contacted the disease.

Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Center for Disease Control, NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu said government has commenced a 24-hour round-the-clock vigilance to check the import of the killer Coronavirus and urged Nigerians not to panic.

Fresh cases of the disease have been reported in Enugu, Jigawa and Kogi states with no fewer than three deaths including a medical doctor who was reported to have been diagnosed of the deadly disease in Jigawa state.
