Kidnappers seize six at UNIABUJA

Security operatives, including soldiers are combing the forests around Gwagwalada in pursuit of kidnappers who invaded the University of Abuja early Tuesday even as the Academic Staff Union of Universities,ASUU, confirmed the abduction of two professors, one non-teaching staff and three of their children from the staff quarters of the institution.

Armed men suspected to be kidnappers had invaded the school premises early Tuesday morning shooting sporadically and later whisked about six persons away.

The ASUU chairman, UNIABUJA, Dr. Kassim Umaru disclosed that the institution is working towards rescuing the victims.

He identified the abductees as Professor Obansa and his son; Professor Oboscolo, his son and daughters, as well as Sambo Mohammed and Dr. Tobin.

He also craved the indulgence of Nigerians to please remember to put the victims in their prayers to ensure they are safe and unhurt.

The Federal Capital Territory,FCT, Police Command in a statement issued by its spokesperson, DSP Josephine Adeh had also initially confirmed the incident.

She stated that the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Babaji Sunday, had dispatched additional tactical and conventional policing resources to the university’s main and satellite campuses to forestall further attacks.

The Vice-Chancellor,UNIABUJA, Professor Abdulrasheed Na’Allah has lamented the insecurity challenge that has plagued our nation while reacting to the incident.

“Our nation is bleeding”, he said and called on the University community to pray hard for God’s intervention and the release of the kidnapped victims.

He also assured continued cooperation from the institution on the protection of staff and students, promising such an evil act would not repeat itself.

He said: “They brought their devastation to our Giri Quarters and we are pursuing them with all it takes to recover our dearest ones they kidnapped.

“From now on, it is compulsory for staff and students to wear their official UniAbuja ID cards when entering any of our campuses including the Giri Quarters.

“The Safety Unit has my instruction to turn anyone back who cannot explain their mission on our campus, Quarters or any UniAbuja branches even if they claim to be staff or students, only University ID card is worn on them is a guarantee for entry.”
