No fewer than 500 golfers have signed up to participate in the 2021 Independence Tournament of the IBB Golf and Country Club, Abuja.
The week-long event, ending on Friday, will attract amateur golfers from Ghana and Zimbabwe who will vie with their Nigerian counterparts for trophies and star prizes, including two Business Class tickets for international travel offered by Qatar Airways.
“There is always prize attachment but we have a trophy for every category and there will be a token cash prize since we are armatures. We are not playing for money, we are playing more for the trophy but there will be a token cash attached to each trophy,” said the chairman of the organizing committee, Mike Ekoja.
“The overall winner for this year is supported by one of our partners Qatar Airways, providing a business class ticket to anywhere in the world. They are also giving us a business class ticket for what we call a hole in one. Prizes are available in three categories – ladies, men and veterans.
“We are grateful to our many sponsors and partners who are supporting us to promote peace, unity and friendship in our country,” said Ekoja.
He also disclosed that the organisers have made adequate plans to ensure that the incessant rains in Abuja will not disrupt the events. There are also precautionary measures on the safety and well-being of all participants throughout the duration of the tournament.
The National Council for Arts and Culture will roll out its drums and costumes to showcase the diversity of the Nigerian culture and promote peace and friendship as envisioned by the tournament.
