Edo Gov’nor in isolation as Speaker tests positive to Covid-19

Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Frank Okiye, has tested positive to coronavirus while the State Governor Godwin Obaseki has gone into self-isolation after reporting close contact with the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari, and the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed.

Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu while briefing journalists said the state is taking measures to tackle the spread of the virus.

Shaibu said the speaker returned from the United Kingdom and had entered self-isolation immediately. “We have one confirmed case in the state, and that case is the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Frank Okiye. He is in a stable condition and his family also tested negative,” he said.

The deputy governor said the state government has been able to track those that had close contact with the speaker, adding that government is tracking 111 persons who might have had contact with him.

He added that six persons have been isolated, samples taken from five persons and results being awaited.

It would be recalled that Obaseki had met Senator Mohammed at the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, and National Economic Council meetings, and he also visited Kyari. Although the governor is not showing any symptoms of the virus, he has taken the necessary precaution to self-isolate to protect people that may otherwise come in contact with him.
