Bade’s New Year Prayer for Dangote

By Bade Bakare

On a group WhatsApp platform, Augustine Bade Bakare aired his views on the desirability or otherwise of Mallam Aliko Dangotes’s foray into the petrochemical industry. In this slightly edited random post, Bade, a retired policeman turned farmer submits:

I give honour to who it is due. Dangote is impressive, serious and pan African.

In business he has shown that he is a trusted hand. His business thrives all over Africa and is competing well with multinational companies who make profit and repatriate such to developed and increase the wealth of their home countries.

The person engaged in this venture, though I’m not his fan, is doing more than any Government from Obasanjo till date ever did in Nigeria.

That his companies are thriving and growing not only in Nigeria but in other African Countries is the true reputation of an African Giant amongst equals.

If Dangote companies are 100% based in Nigeria, maybe I will agree with you. But it is a Pan African icon doing what other businessmen did not do before him.

Just few days ago, the MD/CEO of LafargeHolcim resigned and joined Dangote Cement. He saw that Dangote ambition in Africa is unmatchable by LafargeHolcim which focus more on growing their shareholders shares and not growing the business in Africa.

LafargeHolcim is a swiss multinational competitor in cement business and has been operation in Nigeria since independence as a leading cement company. It was able to scheme Nigerians out all through the waves of indigenization promoted by Nigerians. It was the biggest and best managed out of contemporaries like Okpella, Northern Nigeria Cement Company and Benue Cement Company, now ran aground by a Senator.

Dangote took over ailing government companies and turn them around to become the leaders in their field.

I do not have any information that Dangote is stashing billions of Dollars in foreign banks.

This man is investing in Africa, churning out millions of Dollars of money into ventures that are not popular with Government and other briefcase businessmen. This group usually mill around Banking, Oil and Gas trading and blocks, Hotels, maritime and Construction contracts with nothing to show thereafter as growing the business apart from ostentatious lifestyle.

I give honour to who it is due. Dangote is impressive, serious and pan African.
In business he has shown that he is a trusted hand. His business thrives all over Africa and is competing well with multinational company who makes profit and DHL to developed and increase the wealth of their home foreign country.

Dangote invests his wealth in Africa, spends his money in Africa and spends his profit for Africa. What more can we ask from our leaders.

For whatever reasons, I cannot fault Dangote Refinery project. At least it is expected to stabilize our oil supply and help reduce outrageous subsidies in the name of alleviating poverty. Let’s see how government will mange the success of the refinery with good governance.

In a normal setting, farmers are the ones to be subsidised. Every country that cares for her populace and wants to banish hunger subsidies the farmers so that their income is stable and farming is attractive. Instead Nigeria is subsidising petroleum product as if it is more important than food.

Even if it is argued for economic reasons, the result of petroleum subsidy in Nigeria is monumental corruption to the highest places.

I pray that Nigeria nay Africa be blessed with more people like Dangote who believe that it is now time that African Industrialist take their rightful place in the control of their God given resources and make good use of it for the benefit of the people of Africa.

God bless him and bless his venture. May he continue to prosper head and above all multinational in Africa. So that one day when you talk of business in Africa you see the face of the real Blackman championing the cause of free trade in the world like China and America are doing today.

Amen.
