Politics: Shaibu to face impeachment by Edo house of assembly

The crisis between Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy, Philip Shaibu appears to have worsened as there is an ongoing planned impeachment of the deputy governor by the State House of Assembly.

The impeachment process, according to reports, might begin on Wednesday.

The House had reportedly made arrangements to have the session broadcast live.

One of the lawmakers disclosed that the State Executive paid NTA for live coverage of Shaibu’s planned impeachment and eventual removal.

He also said that 22 lawmakers out of the 24 had signed the impeachment notice, after allegedly collecting the cash sum of N15m each.

Recall that there has been a face-off between Obaseki and Shaibu after the deputy governor asked a court to stop an alleged plot by the governor to remove him from office.

Mr Obaseki has since denied the allegation and subsequently accused Mr Shaibu of manipulating the youth council election in Edo State because of his interest to contest for the 2024 governorship election in the state.
