The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has intensified efforts to secure Nigeria’s re-election into Category C of the International Maritime Organisation, IMO.
Speaking at the ongoing 133rd Session of the IMO Council in London, Oyetola solicited support from maritime nations, including during a strategic meeting with Liberia’s Minister of Transportation, Sirleaf Tyler.
The Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, disclosed that Oyetola’s engagements are part of a broader strategy to regain Nigeria’s place in Category C of the IMO. This category represents 20 countries with special interests in maritime transport or navigation, ensuring global representation in the council.

The NPA highlighted that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has shown strong commitment to this goal, with the inauguration of an Inter-Ministerial Committee to spearhead Nigeria’s maritime agenda.
President Tinubu had earlier signed instruments of accession for six critical IMO conventions. These conventions focus on promoting governance best practices, which are key to unlocking technical expertise, human capital development, and institutional growth for Nigeria’s maritime sector.
During the IMO session, Nigeria’s bid gained momentum as Oyetola sought broader alliances, reflecting Tinubu’s vision of leveraging the country’s maritime potential for economic transformation. The move underscores Nigeria’s determination to solidify its status within the global maritime community, furthering its influence and ensuring national economic prosperity.
This renewed push signals Nigeria’s aspirations to restore its maritime prestige, with active participation in shaping international maritime policies.
