A high court in Ilorin, Kwara State, delivered a ruling on Thursday, sentencing five men to death by hanging for their involvement in the notorious Offa bank robbery that occurred in April 2018.
This decision marks the culmination of a prolonged legal battle spanning over six years, during which the suspects faced various charges related to the violent heist that left several people dead and numerous others injured.
The presiding judge, Justice Haleemah Salman, found the accused—Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Abiodun Ojo, Opeyemi Ojo, and Adebayo Ogunbiyi—guilty of multiple offenses including armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms. The court’s ruling emphasized that the gravity of their crimes warranted the ultimate penalty under Nigerian law. The robbery itself was characterized by extreme violence; reports indicated that armed men stormed multiple banks in Offa, resulting in at least 33 fatalities and significant property damage.

During the trial, which began shortly after the robbery, prosecutors presented a wealth of evidence linking the suspects to the crime. This included testimonies from witnesses and forensic evidence. The defense attempted to argue for leniency, citing various mitigating factors; however, the judge concluded that these did not sufficiently outweigh the severity of their actions.
Following the verdict, defense attorneys have indicated plans to appeal the decision. They argue that procedural errors during the trial could have influenced the outcome. As this case progresses through potential appeals, it will remain closely monitored by both legal analysts and human rights advocates who are concerned about the implications of capital punishment.
This landmark ruling not only serves as a pivotal moment in this particular case but also highlights ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s legal framework regarding violent crime and punishment. As society grapples with these issues, the Offa bank robbery will likely remain a reference point in discussions about justice and public safety in Nigeria.
