The National Examinations Council, NECO, has announced the release of the 2024 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination internal results, with 60.55% of candidates achieving five credits, including Mathematics and English.
This was disclosed by the NECO Registrar and Chief Executive, Professor Dantani Wushishi, at a press conference held at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State, on Thursday, September 19, 2024. Out of the 1,376,423 candidates who registered for the examination, 1,367,736 actually sat for it. Of these, 702,112 were male candidates, while 665,624 were female. A total of 828,284 candidates secured five credits, including Mathematics and English. Meanwhile, 1,147,597 candidates, 83.90%, passed with five credits or more, irrespective of English Language and Mathematics.
Professor Wushishi also highlighted the performance of special needs candidates, stating that 2,267 candidates with special needs participated in the exams. These included 1,104 students with hearing impairments, 348 students with visual impairments, 342 students with albinism, 237 students with autism, and 237 students with low vision .

Addressing examination malpractices, the Registrar noted that 8,437 candidates were involved in various forms of cheating, marking a significant 30.1% reduction from the 12,030 cases recorded in 2023. Forty schools across 17 states were found guilty of mass cheating, and one school in Ekiti State was recommended for de-recognition. Additionally, 21 supervisors were blacklisted for offenses such as aiding cheating, abscondment, extortion, and negligence.
Regarding state performance, Abia State emerged as the top-performing state, with 83.40% of candidates passing with five credits, including Mathematics and English. Abia also led in overall performance with 95.84% of students achieving five credits or more, irrespective of subjects. Katsina State was ranked as the lowest-performing state, with only 42% of candidates passing with five credits, followed by Kano State with 44.42%.
