The Lagos State Government has issued notices to over 280 illegal property owners and occupiers in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, located in Eti Osa Local Government Area.
The government has warned that it may demolish these structures to prevent the creation of slums, protect the Lagos State Master Plan, and safeguard the coastal area from erosion.
In a statement released by the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu, the government disclosed that these contravention notices were issued to owners of properties—whether completed, under construction, or on undeveloped land—found to lack proper government authorization. The notices demand that occupants provide documentation justifying their ownership and construction within seven days, failing which, a demolition notice will follow.
Alebiosu called on property owners to either remove their illegal structures or regularize their documents to avoid penalties. He emphasized that the state will no longer tolerate encroachments along the waterfronts, noting that similar efforts are ongoing in the Okun Ajah Waterfront Scheme.
The Commissioner also reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding waterfront schemes and ensuring the safety of life and property in the state’s coastal areas.

The Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development is a first class Government Ministry for the development of effective and efficient State Waterfront Infrastructure in Africa. It was created in June 2007 from the defunct Lagos State Waterfront & Tourism Development Corporation. This was in accordance to the administration’s resolve to ensure rapid development of the waterfront and protection of shorelines across the state through the provision of requisite and world class infrastructure.
This has not only helped in curtailing ocean surges, flooding and illegal activities along the waterfront, it has also helped to promote a sustainable environment. In view of this, the Ministry has pursued vigorously this lofty dread by drawing inspiration from its mission and vision statement and ministerial responsibilities.
