Burkina Faso has introduced new biometric passports that no longer feature the ECOWAS logo, underscoring its decision to leave the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.
This development comes after the country, along with its neighbors Niger and Mali, announced their withdrawal from the regional bloc in January 2024.
The new passports, which meet international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, include advanced security features and an electronic chip with enhanced data storage capacity.
The absence of the ECOWAS logo on these passports is a tangible manifestation of Burkina Faso’s commitment to its decision to exit the regional body.
The joint withdrawal by Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali was announced following military coups in these countries, which led to their suspension from ECOWAS activities.
The three nations have accused ECOWAS of failing to support their fight against terrorism and imposing what they describe as “illegal, illegitimate, inhumane, and irresponsible sanctions.”

Despite ECOWAS’s efforts to persuade the countries to reconsider, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali have formed the Alliance of Sahel States to tackle regional security challenges independently.
This move has raised concerns about the potential disruption to regional trade and economic integration, as well as the impact on the countries’ ability to transition back to constitutional rule.
The introduction of the new passports without the ECOWAS logo marks a clear step away from the regional bloc, further complicating the already fragile political and economic landscape in the Sahel region.
