Nigerian Army gets first professor

In a historic milestone, the Nigerian Defence Academy ,NDA, in Kaduna has proudly announced the promotion of Lt. Col. Abubakar-Surajo Imam to the esteemed position of Professor of Mechatronics Engineering.

This groundbreaking promotion marks a significant achievement, as Lt. Col. Imam becomes the first-ever professor among serving personnel in the history of the Nigerian Army.

The official announcement was made by Brig.-Gen. AM Tukur, the Registrar of the Academy, in a statement released on Friday in Kaduna State. According to Brig.-Gen. Tukur, the promotion was duly ratified during the NDA Council Meeting in September and took effect from October 1, 2023.

Lt. Col. Imam’s journey to this prestigious position is a testament to his dedication and exceptional contributions to the Department of Mechatronics Engineering at the Academy.

The decision by the council reflects their confidence in Lt. Col. Imam and their acknowledgment of his outstanding service.

The new professor, a native of Kankia in Katsina State, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bayero University, Kano. His academic journey further extends to a Master’s Degree in Mechatronics from Newcastle University, United Kingdom, and a PhD in Mechatronics and Robotics from the same institution.

Lt. Col. Abubakar-Surajo Imam commenced his military career as a member of Short Service Combatant Course 32, later converting to Regular Commission.

Throughout his distinguished service, he has contributed to various units, including 1 Base Workshop, Technical Group EME, HQ Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Corps, and the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria ,DICON.

Beyond his military service, Prof. Imam’s influence extends to the academic and research spheres. He serves as an Examiner and Member of the Central Selection Committee for Master and PhD candidates sponsored by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund.

Additionally, his research affiliations include institutions such as DICON, Defence Research and Development Bureau in Abuja, Command Engineering Depot, Buffalo Engineering Technology, National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, Air Force Institute of Technology in Kaduna, Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, and Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology in Wudil, Kano State.

This promotion not only honors Professor Abubakar-Surajo Imam’s individual accomplishments but also underscores the Nigerian Defence Academy‘s commitment to recognizing and rewarding excellence within its academic community.

As he assumes the role of a professor, Lt. Col. Imam’s legacy becomes an inspiration for aspiring scholars and a symbol of the academy’s dedication to academic distinction.
