U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping met in San Francisco for the first time in a year to discuss various issues between the two nations.
The talks aimed at easing tensions covered military conflicts, drug-trafficking, and artificial intelligence.
However, substantial progress on the significant differences between the U.S. and China may be deferred to a later time. Both sides have set low expectations for the meeting, focusing on contentious issues such as Taiwan, the South China Sea, the Israel-Hamas conflict, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, North Korea, and human rights.
Biden and Xi arrived in San Francisco ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation ,APEC, summit. The summit occurs against the backdrop of Chinese economic challenges, territorial disputes with neighbors, and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has implications for U.S. alliances.
Despite efforts to manage Xi’s visit, protests for and against China’s ruling Communist Party lined the route from the airport to the conference site, creating an unusual atmosphere for Xi.
Biden, seeking direct diplomacy, hopes his longstanding relationship with Xi will salvage deteriorating bilateral ties.
The leaders are expected to meet at a secure and remote location outside San Francisco, away from the APEC summit.
During the meeting, Biden is anticipated to urge Xi to use China’s influence to prevent Iran from escalating the Israel-Hamas conflict. Other topics on the agenda include Chinese interference in foreign elections, the status of detained U.S. citizens in China, and concrete steps to address issues ranging from military communications to trade and climate.
The meeting is crucial for navigating the complex relationship between the two superpowers, with Biden expected to reaffirm U.S. commitments in the Indo-Pacific region, including the security of the Philippines.
As both leaders grapple with domestic and international challenges, the outcomes of this dialogue will shape the trajectory of U.S.-China relations in the coming months.
