In a significant electoral outcome, the Independent National Electoral Commission ,INEC, has officially declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP, and incumbent Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, as the winner of the recently concluded governorship election in the state.
Governor Diri secured a total of 175,196 votes, emerging victorious over his closest rival, the All Progressives Congress , APC, candidate and former petroleum minister, Chief Timipre Sylva, who garnered 110,108 votes.
The Labour Party candidate, Udengs Eradiri, secured a distant third place with 905 votes.
The governor’s triumph was evident in six out of the eight local government areas, including Yenagoa, Kolokuma-Opokuma, Sagbama, Ekeremor, Ogbia, and Southern Ijaw.
On the other hand, Sylva secured victories in Brass and Nembe local government areas.
However, the APC agent, Dennis Otiotio, expressed dissatisfaction, stating that the party would not sign the result sheet.
He cited the cancellation of over 84,000 collated votes by INEC at the commission’s office as the reason for their refusal to endorse the results.
The outcome sets the stage for potential legal challenges and further scrutiny in the aftermath of the keenly contested election.
