The Taraba State Command of the Nigerian Police Force has confirmed the tragic death of Bassy Sardauna, a secondary school teacher who was killed by students on Wednesday in Jalingo.
The spokesperson for the command, Abdullahi Usman, revealed that the deceased worked at Model Secondary School in Jalingo.
According to Usman, the primary suspect is an ex-student of the school who conspired with friends on the school premises to attack and stab the teacher. The victim was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Jalingo, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
The police spokesperson stated that the command has initiated an investigation into the case and is actively working to apprehend all students involved in the killing. He urged anyone with information about their whereabouts to come forward and assist the police.
Investigations by the police indicated that the attack on the teacher was in retaliation for his recent decision to punish some students at the school. The aggrieved students, harboring ill feelings, reportedly ambushed him on his way home.
Medical staff at the Federal Medical Centre confirmed the teacher’s passing, stating that he died a few hours after being brought to the hospital.
While attempts to reach the school authorities were unsuccessful, some staff members acknowledged the incident and expressed concern about the negative behavior of certain students, particularly in the senior classes.
They called on the police to ensure all students involved are brought to justice.
