Court orders immediate release of Emefiele

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday has ordered the immediate and unconditional release of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele.

Justice O.A. Adeniyi made the order following an ex-parte motion filed by Emefiele.

In the motion, the ex-CBN governor was seeking his release from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, pending the hearing and determination of the originating motion.

After hearing the motion, the judge ordered Emefiele’s release.

Respondents in the suit are the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Attorney General of the Federation, Chairman of EFCC and the EFCC.

The Executive Chairman and the EFCC, the third and fourth respondents, were ordered by the court to immediately and unconditionally release Emefiele from detention.

Alternatively, they are ordered to appear him in court on the scheduled date for the substantive motion hearing on notice, with the potential for the court to grant him bail.

The court set the date for the hearing of the substantive motion on notice for Monday, November 6, 2023.

Recall that Emefiele, who was released by the Department for State Service after several court orders for his release, was re-arrested by the EFCC.
