Five inmates at Ikoyi Prison, Lagos, were fared electrocuted while 10 others sustained injuries. Feelers indicate that some prisoners may be trying to escape when electric cables went up in flames.
Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola has ordered a probe. His press secretary, Jane Osuji, said update on the development would be made public.
“The attention of the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has been drawn to an electrocution incident at the Ikoyi Medium Security Prison in Lagos.
“The minister has directed a quick investigation into the root cause and the ministry will in the next few hours share a comprehensive update on the incident.
“While we commiserate with the victims of the incident, the minister has ordered immediate medical attention for those affected,” the statement read.
Ikoyi Prison is one of Nigeria’s oldest and largest correctional facilities, holding thousands of inmates.
