Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has raised a nine-member committee to review the operating rules of the House. The committee is to carry out a comprehensive review of the House Rules with emphasis on contentious aspects.
The House Rules Review Committee is headed by Professor Julius Ihonvbere and consists of old and new members who have three weeks to wrap up its assignment.
The committee is to align the House Rules to conform with global legislative best practices.
The eighth House had been embroiled in contention over some aspects of the House Rules which empowered the then Speaker, Yakubu Dogara to suspend indefinitely any member whom he “thinks” is walking towards the mace with malevolent intent.
Aliyu Madaki (APC Kano) with 10 others had gone to court, urging it to declare the House Rules null and void and of no effect because they were deemed to be draconian.
