The Acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered the immediate decentralization of the Federal SARS, Special Investigation Panel and Special Tactical Squad.

He announced this on Monday at his inaugural conference with commissioners of police and other senior officers in Abuja where he hinted  that a comprehensive reform covering ethics, mode of operation, nomenclature, function delineation, command and control and accountability mechanism of SARS is in the offing.

The new order requires that the squad will henceforth operate under the state commissioners of police while the force headquarter’s unit would be under the DIG, Federal Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.

He also disbanded all quasi-investigation and operation outfits including the Special Investigation Panel, Special Tactical Squad, IG Monitoring and Intelligence Team and others.

The acting IG further announced the setting up of a Special Election Investigation Team tasked with the exclusive function of investigating and prosecuting electoral offenders.

“Since no police force ever succeeds by alienating its citizens, we are firmly resolved that under my watch, policing will be citizens-centered, rules-driven and accountability-guided,” he announced.

Adamu said that a protocol to document the outcome of the reform would emerge soon as the standard operating procedure of the SARS.
